Speaker: Malcolm Hey, author, underwater environment tour leader, BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year, and a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society

The speaker for April is Michael Abston, PADI Instructor out of Underwater Adventures in Leesburg. Michael will be starting to teach SCUBA classes in The Villages. If you know someone who you think would be a good speaker for us, please let the board know and we will make every effort to get them to our meeting.

Bring your name tag. If you haven’t yet picked up your name tag, we’ll have it for you at the meeting. Bring any equipment you have for sale or give away

February 3rd 2010 Meeting Minutes

Tom Mitchell, President, opened the meeting, with 36 in attendance, especially welcoming visitors and introducing the officers. Tom, for the benefit of the visitors, explained the purpose and functions of the Club. Minutes from the last meeting were read by Ken Jordan, Secretary. Minutes were approved as read. Ken Loudermilk, Treasurer, reported the Club’s account balance to be $605.79. The complete Treasurer’s report is attached and was approved as read.

Unfinished Business:

• Tom reminded members of the need to form the 2010 Nominating Committee. Bob and Mary Petrucelli volunteered with Madeline Helbock as the Chair.
• Tom also reminded the members of the upcoming Outdoor Expo Sat-Sun Mar 13-14. Contact Madeline to either help set-up (Friday) or staff the booth (Saturday and Sunday).
• Bill Thornton reminded the members of the upcoming annual picnic. As a reminder you must be a member to attend - contact Bill by Feb 14 with your RSVP and whether you are bringing a dish or a desert. The complete flyer is attached.

Recent Dives:

. Three members reported on their recent trips. One to Cozumel and Grand Cayman – these dives being their FIRST, they had a great time! Another member also went to Cozumel, with the third going to Aruba and diving the wreck Antilla, her comment – she “wished she had taken her camera”!

Other Business:

• Jerry Clinton worked with the Villages Recreation Department and we are now allowed to use/test etc. Scuba equipment at all Villages Sports Pools during the scheduled combo-swim times.

Tom then introduced our guest speaker Lt Caruthers, Sumter County Sherriff’s Dive Search and Recovery Team. Lt Caruthers then gave an informative and entertaining overview of the services provided by his team.

Anyone planning a dive or having equipment for sale should forward the info to Ken Jordan (thevillagesscubaclub@gmail.com). The information will be posted on the Club’s website http://users.thevillages.net/johkoe/scubaclub.htm and e-mailed to the members.

The next meeting will take place on March 3rd 2010. The guest speaker will be Malcolm Hey, Malcolm is a photographer, writer and tour leader specializing in the underwater environment. http://www.malcolmhey.co.uk/
